On the first Saturday of each month, the Monaco Ballroom on Atherton Road in Hindley, near Wigan, WN2 3EU (tel: 01942 255138 or 01942 256212) is the venue for the regular Northern Soul and Tamla Motown nights.
The venue boasts a beautiful maple wood sprung dance floor. The ballroom has a lovely atmosphere and is one of the friendliest venues around and a great hit with dancers. Admission is £5, payable on the door. Venue times are 8 pm till 2 am.
The ballroom is run by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, with more information on the council website.
The music policy is across the board Northern soul. The high number of regular DJs means that the promoters have a really good feel for what the audience wants and they play skillfully to the floor. The venue is very much home to people who want to dance and is not troubled by handbaggers.
If your tastes are good traditional Northern with an across the board smattering, then you won't go wrong here. One of my very favourite venues.
Directions:
From M61 Jct 5 : Take the A58 towards Wigan. Upon reaching Hindley town centre, bear left at the mini-roundabout. Turn right into market car park.
From M6 Jct 24 : Take the A58 towards Wigan. Upon reaching Hindley town centre, turn left at the traffic lights. Turn right into market car park.
From Wigan : Take the A577 towards Leigh/Bolton. At Hindley turn left into the market car park (just after the Wiganer pub).
From Leigh : Take the A577 towards Wigan. You will pass the Monaco Ballroom on your left. To park continue through the traffic lights and turn first right into the market car park.
Free parking is available in the market car park and the side streets opposite the Monaco Ballroom.
NB. The Monaco is situated next to the big church at the main traffic-light cross roads (not the church at the mini-roundabout) in the centre of Hindley.
