In January 2006, promoters Pete and Liz moved their venue "For Dancers Only" from Wigan Town Hall to St James' Social Centre on St James Road, in Orrell, near Wigan. The venue is held on the 2nd Saturday monthly and runs from 8 pm to 1 am, with bar till 12.30 am.
Music policy here is to go for the fast 100 mph tracks and play the records that were popular at Wigan Casino but don't get heard so much these days. The idea behind the venue is to play the music that will make you want to get up on the floor and dance. Pete's philosophy is that he wants dancers "going home in an ambulance" after dancing to those fast blistering tracks!;-) Regular DJs are Ian G (Chesterfield & Burnley), Ronnie (Oldham & Bolton) and Pete N (Wigan & Harrogate), with a guest DJ on the night.
The centre is a pleasant venue with a sprung dance floor, separate from the main part of the social centre. Ample car parking is available in the grounds adjacent to the centre. There is a bar in the dance hall and generous seating all round the room. The room has a low ceiling, but is very well ventilated with ceiling extractor fans, so cigarette smoke is not a problem at all (as it can be at some low-ceiling venues).
St James' Social Centre is set back off the main St James Road and accessed by turning into the drive at St James RC Primary School, entrance fee is £4 payable on the door. There is a members only policy - for further details and membership, email Pete and Liz soulsmurf@blueyonder.co.uk.
Brilliant venue held for serious soulie dancers and, as you'd expect, with a very high level of respect between dancers. Highly recommended if you like your music fast!;-)
